Vocational Success Stories, Scott

Scott assembling mailersScott is a gentleman diagnosed with Usher’s Syndrome. He was born with hearing and sight, but at the age of 9 Scott’s parents were informed that due to a genetic disorder, their son would be deaf and blind by adulthood. Scott lived at home with his loving supportive family, and was educated in some of California’s best Deaf and Blind schools.

Upon graduation, Scott then attended Helen Keller National Center's two-year program. Scott came to Sacramento, and has been a STEP consumer since 1994.

Over the last 13 years we have supported Scott as his sight has declined from “Low Vision” to only light and dark perception. His hearing loss is moderate when he wears his hearing aid, but profound when he doesn’t. Scott is well spoken, and extremely funny with a great sense of humor. Over the years, if you asked Scott his career goals or his Dream Job, he would remark ”A model for new men’s clothes, like in the catalog” And he would strike a pose.

Scott’s current program with STEP Vocational is a balance of therapeutic activities and employment, like the Sacramento Convention & Visitor’s Bureau monthly mailer projects, where Scott and his co-workers collate, stuff, label, and repackage for the City of Sacramento. Scott is also a volunteer at the North Area Teen Center.
